In this installment of vegan travels, I kept it local. Recently, I was invited to The Herd Juicery in Long Branch, NJ for a menu tasting with my pals Lauren from NaturallyLauren.com and Cherise from Vegan in NJ. With great company, interesting conversation, and absolutely delicious food, it was definitely an experience worth sharing.
About The Herd Juicery:
The Herd Juicery is an organic, gluten-free, plant-based juice bar within walking distance from the beach in West End Long Branch. They have a strong dedication to high-quality food that nourishes the body while tasting great. Creativity overflows on their vast menu, with tons of different smoothies, juices, superfood bowls, and more. While it is a juice bar, they also serve some savory food items as well, which is mainly what I tried.
Here’s what I tried:
Fine Health Kombucha
Fine Health Kombucha is a company local to New Jersey that produces organic, premium-quality kombucha brews. As a big fan of kombucha, I was so excited to see that The Herd Juicery sells Fine Health both in bottles and on tap. I tried the Yerba Berry brew that was on tap at the time; it was so refreshing! You can definitely taste the difference when a kombucha brew is high-quality, and Fine Health Kombucha certainly meets that standard. Price: $6.50
I was able to try their two different avocado toast options: the standard and the deluxe. The Standard encompasses all of the classic flavors that avocado toast should have. Layered on gluten-free bread, it includes fresh avocado, lemon, salt, pepper, and sesame seeds. Price: $5.75
Meanwhile, The Deluxe is avocado toast taken to the next level. Also on gluten-free bread, this option is loaded with vibrant beet hummus, avocado slices, cashew ranch, lemon, salt, and cayenne pepper. It is as delicious as it is beautiful. I also want to note that this is the best gluten-free bread I have tried to date. Price: $6.75
Three Bean Chili & Coconut Curry Butternut Squash Soup
Both the chili and soup are on their daily menu, made from locally sourced produce. Chili is one of my favorite foods, so I’m a bit biased in saying that was my favorite of the two, but they are both really tasty. While the chili is rustic and hearty, the squash soup is silky smooth in texture and flavor. You get the best of both worlds, so you can be sure that one of these warming bowls will fulfill whatever craving you may have.
Buffalo Tempeh Sandwich
This sandwich is one for the books. As much as I loved everything, this was a new level. I love buffalo as it is, but there’s something special about this sandwich. The best way I can describe it is a perfect burst of combined flavors in every bite. It is creamy, but it still has great texture. It’s perfectly spiced, and dare I say even a bit cheesy. The sandwich consists of buffalo tempeh, avocado, spring mix, and cashew ranch on gluten-free bread. Needless to say, I will be ordering this again very soon. Price: $8.75
As delicious as the food was, that surprisingly wasn’t the most prominent aspect for me. Instead, it was how the food made me feel. I have a very sensitive stomach, and most food often does not agree with me. That being said, the food from The Herd Juicery left me satisfied without feeling heavy. I felt energized, nourished, and ready to take on the rest of my evening. It was also really inspiring to learn more about this company that has such genuine values and high standards for the people they serve. I would recommend this place to anyone, and I am looking forward to being a regular customer myself.
